Critical hits are not highlighted visually but they do affect the time it takes to destroy minerals, gates, and barriers in the mineshafts: the higher your critical chance and damage, the more quickly you will be able to destroy the object. You can check that they work correctly by measuring the time it takes your zombies to mine before and after upgrading the critical hit card.
